L is for Larvae
Our caterpillars from Insect Lore arrived a day early. They sat in the mailbox for several hours in the sun, but they are thankfully ALL alive and well. We have one teeny tiny caterpillar that may not form a chrysalis around the same time as the others. Alyssa was ecstatic when they arrived! We carefully open the package as quick as we could - our excitement was overwhelming. We discussed the butterfly life cycle earlier that week, the needs of caterpillars and butterflies, and we set-up the butterfly habitat. We started our Life Cycle Unit Study as a review product from Moving Beyond the Page on Monday. We ordered the caterpillar larvae from Insect Lore which is a company I trust. I have ordered from them in the past when purchasing butterfly larvae for my classroom. The package took less than one week to arrive. Alyssa will observe the life cycle on a daily basis.
I found a frugal way to obtain butterfly larvae online today. I wish I had seen this before purchasing through Insect Lore. I even considered ordering a second batch so that we could slow down and review the concept again after the move, but I doubt that is going to happen. The Butterfly Lady is offering FREE caterpillar larvae for a LIMITED time. I haven't purchased from her before so I can't share my experiences. You'll have to make the decision as to whether or not you feel comfortable ordering through the Butterfly Lady. Payment can be made using Paypal. You MUST obviously pay the affordable price of $9.97 for the shipping and handling fees. I paid more for shipping through Insect Lore than she's asking. The butterfly larvae will be shipped late June or July. Go check it out if you think you might be interested. I have a feeling this deal will be a popular one. Free Painted Lady Butterfly Caterpillar Larvae Offer from the Butterfly Lady ends July 5th, 2013.
Did you purchase butterfly larvae this year? Where did you get them?

ReplyDeleteYour welcome Nicole! It looks like a lot of crew members took advantage of this offer. My daughter is definitely enjoying her observation time! The hands-on activity is so worth the smiles and excitement coming from children who experience it. I appreciate the comment. I hope you'll come back and leave a link when and if you share photos on your blog.
ReplyDeleteWe also typically order from Insect Lore. Our butterflies just came out yesterday and today. We will release them tomorrow. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great activity! Thanks so much for linking up with Montessori Monday and sharing your resources. I featured your post at the Living Montessori Now Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/LivingMontessoriNow
ReplyDeleteMany people have notified me that they haven't received their caterpillars and if they did there was a long delay. I wanted to make sure my readers were all aware of this. I am so sorry many of you are experiencing problems. My only wish was to share a great deal and never expected this to happen.
