Independent Reading

Alyssa is 3 years and 5 months

Independent Reading Update
Alyssa is reading quite well now. We are currently on the search for an age appropriate curriculum that meets her reading needs (phonics, literature-based, etc.) She is reading many first and second grade books with ease. She still eagerly awaits school time. Any recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated? I look forward to hearing about your experiences with available products. I have been spending too many hours researching online and would love to hear your opinions at this point. The picture below is an old one of her reading one of the same books listed below. I didn't take any photos today.

DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read) usually lasts 15-20 minutes, but today Alyssa sat and read for a longer period of time.

She read the following books independently:
1.) Mouse Tales written by Arnold Lobel
2.) Mouse Soup written by Arnold Lobel
3.) Frog and Toad Are Friends also written by Arnold Lobel
4.) The Pigeon Wants a Puppy written by Mo Willems

I hope to hear from you soon!

  1. She is only 3 and a half, and already reading so well, I would just let her read whatever she wants. Also, if she is reading 2nd grade books, she probably doesn't need phonics anymore. :)

  2. Have you ever used the We Both Read series? My children loved them! The books are progressive. From your posts, she'll be past the K books and most likely the K-1 books. But you might wish to start with the grade 1 books. www.webothread.com has the list of what is available but you can purchase them through Amazon.com. I came across one at our local library and over time we have purchased pretty much the set. I love that they have nonfiction ones also!

  3. I'm glad you're back. I found your blog a few months ago and really enjoyed it. It has been really helpful. I was hoping you'd blog again.

  4. Amber - No, I haven't ever heard of this series. I checked out the samples today and I have a feeling that Level 1-2 might be too easy for her ... I will definitely check our library to see if they carry them. Then, I can see what level is more appropriate for her based on her comprehension. I definitely appreciate the feedback!

  5. My daughter is also 3.5 yrs and reading voraciously. She loves (to read alone)the Alfie series by Shirley Hughes. She also loves Mr. Putter readers by Cynthia Rylant, though these are a bit easier for her. Alyssa might enjoy those too. I found you via Preschool Corner ,but I think I've been here before. You have one smart girl:)

  6. Hi Julie! Thank you for commenting. I know that I have been to your blog before too ... I believe I found some pretty awesome learning activities. I checked it out again today and plan on spending some time over there reading updates. It seems like the girls are working at similar levels. I believe I found you through Preschool Corner or 1+1+1=1 a long time ago. Don't you just LOVE their desire to read. I will have to check out the Alfie series ... I don't think I am familiar with them. Thank you for the suggestion! Do you use a phonics program or do you do literature units since your daughter is already reading??? I hope you see this.
